Fitz Roy - Patagonia
Why Fitz Roy?
The iconic backdrop of Fitz Roy is something I'm used to seeing nearly daily as it's the silhouette used by the company "Patagonia" in their logo. The only way I can describe this place in person is otherworldly. It's jaw droopingly incredible. And, for a day hike, it's a must do if you're in Patagonia. It's well worth the trip just by itself.
Originally I wasn't going to have time to get out to El Chalten to hike Fitz Roy, but because I was able to finish the O Circuit 2 days early, it gave me the time I needed to make the trek out here and, wow, I'm so glad that I did. This place is absolutely stunning. I feel very honored to have been able to stand at the base and take in the magic of nature's incredible work.
The hike is not too difficult overall and most trek in with a simple pack, or none at all. The hardest part of the trek is the final summit up to the Laguna mirador. But, honestly, it's not that bad.
There were very few people who made it all the way to the Laguna this day. Maybe it's because of the final trek to the top, or maybe it's because you can see Fitz Roy's magical mountains most of the entire hike, so it actually beckons you to finish it, but if you bail out, at least you've seen the mountains. For me it was well worth the full trek to go to the mirador and soak my feet in the ice cold water and sit and marvel at the awesomeness of this place. I was at the Laguna for about 2 hours taking it in, exploring the edges and taking some photos.
Here are a few snaps from my trek to Fitz Roy.
